WHEN WE THOUGHT WE WERE BLIND by Lee Stern

It doesn’t seem to matter
that there’s a history waiting to be written
and the people we have to ask to know what was going on
are no longer here.
Maybe they’re arranging their clothing somewhere.
Maybe they’re waiting for a store to open
and the people in line next to them
don’t have any money so what’s the difference.
What I’m trying to get across to you is, there are lots of possibilities
and the sooner we admit it to ourselves without going crazy,
then the sooner everything’s going to work out.
And we can go back to writing our history books
that will have almonds in them
and large forests of merchandise, that we almost
discovered when we thought we were blind.
